The Indian Space Agency (ISRO) conducted the first test launch of the launch vehicle as part of the planned Gaganyaan mission. The BBC reported this on Saturday, October 21.
The launch took place today from the spaceport on the island of Sriharikota. It was the second attempt in 24 hours – the first was aborted five seconds before the scheduled launch time.
The test was conducted to show whether the crew could safely leave the capsule if it malfunctioned.
“I am very pleased to announce the successful completion of the TV-D1 (Test Vehicle Demonstration 1) mission,” Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief Sridhar Somanath said after the launch.
It is known that sending a manned mission with three astronauts into a 400-kilometer low-Earth orbit will take place only after the successful completion of a series of unmanned tests.
India approved the mission to send a crew into orbit in December 2018. The cost of the Gaganyaan project is estimated at $1 billion. The mission is planned for 2025.
Let us recall that India became the first country to land a spacecraft on the Moon’s south pole after Russia’s attempt to land its Luna-25 station on the same spot ended in failure.
This week, India announced the deadline for sending astronauts to the Moon.
