Triton, which weighs 250 kilograms, is the first weather satellite designed and manufactured in Taiwan and uses exclusively Taiwanese components.
Taiwan has successfully launched its first domestically produced weather satellite, Triton, into orbit. This was reported by the local publication CNA which is affiliated with the Taiwanese space agency TASA.
It was noted that the satellite was launched by the French Vega C launch vehicle, which is designed to lift the spacecraft to a height of 550-650 kilometers above the Earth. The launch took place from a spaceport in French Guiana in northeastern South America at 22:37 local time (9:37 Monday Taipei time).
Hours after launch, TASA said Triton successfully entered a specific orbit at an altitude of 601 kilometers and contacted a ground control station on the island.
Triton, which weighs 250 kilograms, is the first weather satellite designed and manufactured in Taiwan and uses exclusively Taiwanese components. In total, its design uses 11 key locally produced satellite-related components and technologies.
One of the features of the device is the use of Taiwan’s own global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) with a unique data processing module developed by local specialists.
Work on the Triton project began in 2013. The satellite’s primary role is to collect data on sea surface winds and complement data from ground-based wind observation systems to more accurately predict the paths of hurricanes and heavy rains.
The satellite launch is expected to have a major impact on Taiwan’s space capabilities and help the island become an exporter of valuable meteorological data. Also, during Triton’s operation, the Taiwan Space Agency plans to test a number of training technologies and collect data necessary for the development of a new spacecraft.
Let’s recall that Iran has successfully launched an Earth remote sensing satellite.
SpaceX has also reportedly launched another group of Starlink satellites.
