An Israeli saliva test startup has developed the first saliva-based pregnancy test. It uses a simple hand-held applicator to collect a saliva sample, which is inserted into an assay device and outputs results within ten minutes.
Traditionally, two lines mean a positive result, and one means a negative. The test shows the level of human beta chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG). It is a hormone that usually appears in the saliva of pregnant women from about three to four weeks of pregnancy,
“β-hCG is commonly referred to as the pregnancy hormone. When a fertilized egg is implanted in the uterus, the placenta begins to produce this hormone, its level usually continues to increase during the first weeks of pregnancy. Clinical trials conducted on more than 300 women have shown that the accuracy of the test is approximately 95 % if used from the first day of a missed period.
