The discovery of a new planet confirms the existence of a second known planetary system orbiting a twin star.
Astronomers have discovered an exoplanet similar to Tatooine, like the fictional world of Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. He received the name BEBOP-1c. Space.com reported it.
It has been noted that double stars are very common in our galaxy – about half of the sun-shaped stars in the Milky Way galaxy are in binary systems. At this time, astronomers confirmed the discovery of 14 planets – planets that orbit the same stars.
So, in a new study, astronomers studied the TOI-1338 binary system, located at a distance of about 1320 light-years from Earth in the constellation Piktor. In 2020, NASA’s exoplanet-hunting TESS space telescope discovered a planet named TOI-1338b orbiting the star pair TOI-1338. Using the European Southern Observatory and a telescope located in Chile’s Atacama Desert, scientists tried to accurately determine the mass of TOI-1338b. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to do so. Instead, they discovered a second planet.
According to experts, the newly discovered world is named BEBOP-1c, from the name of the project where the data was collected, BEBOP, which stands for Binaries Escorted By Orbiting Planets (Binaries Escorted By Orbiting Planets). (BEBOP-1 is another name for the TOI-1338 binary system).
BEBOP-1c is a gas giant with about 65 times the mass of Earth and about five times the mass of Jupiter. It orbits its star at a distance of about 79% of an astronomical unit (the distance between the Earth and the Sun). The planetary year lasts 215 days.
It was previously reported that using different measurement methods, scientists learned the approximate mass of the Milky Way.
