As you know, the galaxy itself is located 55 million light-years from Earth, and there is a black hole in its center.
For the first time in history, scientists have created a three-dimensional map of the large elliptical galaxy M87. So it turns out that it is shaped like a giant potato. Space writes about it.
The map was created using the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii.
“We created a 3D map of the M87 galaxy by studying the motion of stars around its central supermassive black hole. These data also helped to more accurately determine the mass of the M87* black hole. If previous studies showed that its mass is 6.5 billion times that of the Sun, then new calculations show that the mass of the black hole is 5.4 billion times the mass of the sun,” the researchers said.
The mass of the M87 galaxy is about 10 times the mass of the Milky Way. It grew to its massive size thanks to the absorption of nearby smaller galaxies.
Recall that earlier the James Webb telescope took a picture of the Wolf-Raet star, located at a distance of about 5600 light-years from us.
