POT selected four participants, two men and two women, for the agency’s first annual simulated mission in a habitat that recreates living conditions in Mars.
CHAPEA (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) is a ground mission that will begin in June at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The mission is the first of three planned Earth surface simulations. Mars one year during which crew members will live and work in a 5,500 square foot 3D printed habitat.

The researchers will model the objectives of the human mission to Marsincluding lack of resources, equipment failure, communication delays and other environmental stressors.
“The simulation will allow us to collect data on physical and cognitive performance to gain more information about the potential impact of long-duration missions to Mars on crew health and performance,” said Grace Douglas, Mars Principal Investigator. CHAPEA. “Ultimately, this information will help POT make informed decisions to design and plan a successful human mission for Mars”.
POT establishes a long-term presence on the Moon for science and research through Sagebrush. The knowledge gained about the Moon and its environs will help send the first astronauts to Mars in future.
A year on Mars: who are the participants?
Participants were selected during the 2021 competition for applicants POT. Four crew members:
- Kelly Hastonan, commander. Hastonan, a registered member of the Mohawk Nation of the Six Nations of the Great River in Canada, is a research scientist with experience in modeling human disease.
