Meta has released an open source project called Animated drawings this allows artists, creators, and developers to add motion and animation to characters they have drawn or created.
Here’s How Animated Drawings Work
This initiative of the Artificial Intelligence Fundamental Research Group (FAIR) of the department dedicated to Artificial intelligence Meta AI started in 2021 as part of the work on computer vision. They applied models for object detection, pose estimation, image processing, and image segmentation “to quickly create a digital version of a drawing.”
The company explained in a statement that after evaluating these parameters, they thought about the possibility of deforming these drawings and animating them using traditional computer graphics techniques.
So they offered a demo “hopefully collect 10,000 drawings” to be able to train their machine learning model on those samples. The opening of this system caused an “overwhelmingly positive” response, with over 1.6 million images uploaded by users in the first few months.
While this first demo indicated that the drawings should include people, some users shared images of brand logos, animals like birds and fish, and other shapes that this tool didn’t natively support.
In that sense, the company commented that while it warned that “there was an interest in more experiences based on drawing and animation”, instead of including all the requested features, it decided to publish an open source version of the models used. demo Animated drawings. So, Target He admitted that he did this to inspire other developers to create applications using animation assets from drawings.
Therefore, the developers have created a public web page where users can upload their creations from the device. This tool scans a drawing and allows users to narrow down the characters they want to animate in case a drawing with multiple characters is shared.
Once recognized by this system, several animation options are offered, which are collected in the “All” section and classified according to what each of them offers in sections such as “Dancing”, “Fun”, “Jumping” and “Walking”.
Once the desired animation is selected, the platform allows you to either upload it or share it via social networks such as Facebook, Twitter or the WhatsApp messaging platform. Also includes the option to send this animation via email. (Europe Press)
