Spain announced this Thursday its investigation into the American conversational robot ChatGPT on the same day that France and the European Union set up a working group on the technology.
The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) said in a statement that “it has initiated an ex officio” “investigation against the American company OpenAI, the owner of the service. ChatGPTdue to a possible breach of data protection regulations.
ChatGPT under the gun
Italian authorities blocked on March 31 ChatGPTa robot that appeared in November that, with the help of artificial intelligence, can have complex conversations with its interlocutor, claiming that it is he who does not comply with personal data legislation.
The French data protection authority announced on Thursday its own investigation, and the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), which is responsible for coordinating similar offices across the European Union, said it had set up a working group to look into the matter.
In doing so, the EDPB seeks an exchange of information between the European authorities on possible actions to be taken regarding ChatGPT.
“With the start of the investigation in Spain and participation in the European working group, the AEPD acts in parallel (…) as a national supervisory authority, and in coordination with its European counterparts through the Committee,” explained the Spanish institute.
They don’t want to close the doors
The AEPD stated that it stands for “innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence” but affirmed that technological development must always be “compatible with the rights and freedoms of the people”.
After Italy blocked ChatGPT, OpenAI said it is “committed to protecting people’s privacy” and believes its tool is in compliance with the law. (AFP)
