The South Korean antitrust regulator announced a fine of 42.1 billion won (about $31 million). Google and its regional subsidiaries for acts of bad faith aimed at maintaining their dominant position in the local mobile video game market.
Between June 2016 and April 2018, the American giant signed illegal agreements with South Korean video game companies that forced them to only launch their products on their Google Play store, according to the Asian Country’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC).
As such, they failed to launch their content on One Store, a platform owned by three local phone carriers (KT, LGU+ and SKT) and internet service giant Naver.
Google is on the defensive
According to the FTC, Google solidified its dominance in the local market, and the company also asked its employees to delete emails related to this matter and not to leave any traces related to these contracts.
The Mountain View company denied the allegations, saying it would decide soon whether to appeal the commission’s decision.
“Google is making significant investments to support developer success, and we respectfully disagree with the decision of the South Korean FTC,” the company said in a statement today. EFE
