This phenomenon has never been observed anywhere else in the solar system. It was discovered thanks to the collection of archival data from three spacecraft and two space telescopes.
A group of scientists conducted a new study in which they found that there is an unknown phenomenon on Saturn. This depends on the fact that the planet’s rings directly affect the upper layers of Saturn’s atmosphere. The New Atlas writes about it.
“Saturn’s rings are actually interacting with the planet. At the same time, such an interaction was not known before. It turns out that the ring system can heat the upper layers of Saturn’s atmosphere. We got such important results when we study archival observations of ultraviolet light made by spacecraft and telescopes,” the experts say.
Thus, it became known that particles from Saturn’s rings slowly migrated through the planet’s atmosphere. Preliminarily, this affects the level of atomic hydrogen in the composition of Saturn, which, according to scientists, is quite surprising.
In addition, images from the Hubble telescope showed that there is a large level of ultraviolet radiation on the planet in the form of a spectral line of hot hydrogen in the atmosphere of Saturn. Thus, it became known that the atmosphere of the planet is warming.
“Most likely, Saturn’s upper atmosphere is heated by particles from its rings, which continue to fall on the planet. This fall is due to the gravitational attraction of Saturn. The particles from the gas giant’s rings are enter its atmosphere at certain latitudes, and change the composition of the upper layers of the atmosphere,” the researchers concluded.
Recall that early astronomers discovered a previously unknown planet of enormous size called UN271 2014, which added to the solar system.
