So it was found that the southern part of the satellite contains more water than previously thought.
An international team of scientists has compiled a new water map of the moon’s south pole. It was described in The Planetary Science Journal.
Representatives of NASA and the German Center for Aviation and Cosmonautics SOFIA worked on the map.
The project covers about a quarter of the edge of the satellite visible from Earth. Specifically, starting at the 60 degree latitude mark and up to the South Pole.
Because of the massive area, scientists have determined how water is related to the Moon’s relief features.
To do this, the researchers compared data obtained around the moon’s south pole, with a relatively dry region near the equator. This made it possible to see the dynamics of changes in its volume.
Thus, water is found in high concentration on the shaded edges of craters and mountains.
In addition, 13 possible landing areas near the south lunar pole have been identified for the future Artemis program.
In the future plans of scientists – to determine where the water will come from and its age.
Recall that early scientists from the Livermore National Laboratory named after E. Lawrence explained the appearance of water on Earth.
