TikTok CEO, The Zi Chu Showrecognized by the Committee on Energy and Trade USA that the platform collects and analyzes the videos users post to determine their age when it suspects they are underage.

At present, the Chinese platform owned by bytedance, you can block accounts if you think users are under the minimum age of 13 in most countries. To recover them, the social network forces users to send them a photo of an identity document or a selfie with the same card.

Recently tik tak It also raised the minimum age for live streaming to require users to be at least 18 years old, instead of the 16 years old that was required prior to October 2022.

TikTok targeted by the US

The security and privacy of user data, especially minors and children, and the use of their information by the platform are among the main concerns in countries such as France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and, especially, USA.

So much so that this country is putting pressure on bytedance sell tik tak for allegedly spying on journalists and US citizens. In fact, the government demanded tik tak distribute its shares if it wants to continue operating in its territory.

Earlier this month, the White House warned that the social network was a potential national security threat, arguing that it might be trying to collect data on its citizens.

TikTok crawls in detail

To clarify how it handles user information, CEO from tik tak appeared before the House Trade and Energy Committee USAwhere he commented on how the company vets those users it considers underage.

First of all, The Zi Chu Show indicated that it uses an age control filter, that is, during the creation of an account, the platform asks the user for the day, month and year of his birth.

It should be remembered that tik tak distinguishes between three types of personal accounts. The first one is for users aged 13 to 15 who have a personal account by default, who do not have the direct message feature enabled and in which they can only comment on contacts included in the Friends section.

This is followed by user accounts between the ages of 16 and 17, which can be set as private at the time of creation and cannot receive direct messages from other users by default, among other features, and those over 18, who can set all their preferences. from the “Settings” section.

In any case, this verification system is not enough to ensure the safety of the platform, given that users can lie about their real age.

When questioned about this, Chu admitted to the previously mentioned US institution that it scans videos users post to determine their real age. “This (content) is public. So, if you post a video, (the user) chooses to allow other people to see your video,” stated the CEO tik takas assembled TechCrunch.

This tool reminds you that although tik tak he explains in detail his policy on how he proceeds when he detects underage users on the platform, he does not offer details on how he estimates their age or the procedures he uses to figure it out.

In this regard, it should be noted that last year Bloomberg reported that in 2021 the company met with two software vendors involved in age assessment using biometric parameters.

However, this media reported that one of the platform’s directors decided to reject this commercial offer, fearing that the platform would be caught spying on underage users.
