In a world full of stories video, sound is still the differential between what you miss out on and what grabs your attention. DJI is a brand with a lot of focus on video, but its first audio product is without a doubt a strong bet against RODE and its Wireless GO, the system I currently use. NIUSGEEK tested DJI Mic and told if they are worth paying for.

DJI MIC: Everything you need to know

You must set a reference point. In this case, RODE Wireless GO II is without a doubt a direct competitor to these teams. I have been using the GO II game since January 2022 and this is my main recording equipment. Throughout the review, you will have a clear picture in comparison to RODE.

Smaller package. This is what surprised me the most about the DJI Mic. Compared to RODE, the size of TX and RX is much smaller, almost twice. In the case of the RX, it’s slightly wider, but with an OLED touchscreen that leaves behind the IPS panel built into the RX RODE, even though they have the same extension.

Speaking of packaging, DJI took great care with the microphone packaging. Just a note: when you purchase the RODE Wireless GO II, you get a complete wireless kit, charging and audio cable, as well as headphones and a case. Here is the case, but not every case. It’s the one that packs slots for everything: two TX, RX, and iOS adapters, a USB-C connector, and a camcorder shoe.

While both systems include windscreens in the package, we’re giving DJI an extra point for including magnets in the clips; so we can place the DJI microphone anywhere without attaching it to clothing. In the case of RODE, you need to buy a magnetic clip cover.

This protective case is made of rough plastic and has a 2600mAh battery to charge 3 devices up to 1.8 times. To have this with RODE you need to buy a separate case and carry the adapters with you in another case. The same body coating is used on the DJI TX and RX.

More control from the equipment. In the case of the TX, we have a mic capsule next to the wired mic input at the top, a pairing button above the record button on the right, a USB-C port above the power button on the edge on the left, and a charging pin system on the base. Above the DJI logo are two LED indicators for pairing and recording.

For the RX, DJI reserves the OLED tactile front panel for volume control and settings menu interaction, which RODE only has via the app when connecting the RX or TX to a PC or phone via cable. On the left side of the panel we have a headphone input for monitoring and a TRS output for connecting our camera via cable. On the right side we have the power button next to the USB-C port, while on the opposite side of the panel there are charging contacts and a system of eight smaller contacts for Lightning, USB-C or cold shoe cameras. Almost like LEGO.

I must admit that the system, although solid, is also solid to remove modules. It takes a bit of effort to separate the connectors, but we only have one way to install them: follow the arrows. There are four LED indicators on the case for determining the power reserve level and a USB-C port for charging the entire device.

Simple connection. Simply use the correct connector—iOS, Android, or a cold shoe—to start using your DJI Mic. As soon as you turn on the RX and one of the TXs – or both – the system immediately connects. The equipment operates at frequencies around 2.4 GHz, so you should avoid places with too many wireless connections. We can consistently reach distances of up to 240 meters, although we can achieve a little more by sacrificing transmission speed.

What can we control from the screen? A few things. WITH swipe down is the same one we use on mobile phones, to see our notifications we can access the system settings menu. To begin with, we have the option to record in mono, in mono with a guard channel – less dB as a record backup – and in stereo, with separate channels for each TX. We also see the ability to adjust the audio input level with a large white bar for dB adjustment. Since the RX has a headphone output, we can also adjust the monitor output level.

The main screen displays active channels, M MONO, TX intensity and battery level of 3 devices.

TX can now be adjusted from the OLED screen: bass cutter, transmitter gain, REC button lock, automatic scheduled recording, vibration level and brightness of the LEDs placed in the case – please note that in version 72.87 of the system we can already have high, low lights on and off.

Finally, we can adjust the panel brightness, hardware pairing, language, date, and one-touch system restore to clear the settings.

How are they recorded? Well, not bad at all. With the update, recording stability at a distance has been greatly improved, an annoying bug that interfered with recording when you looked away from the RX. In general, the tablet captures everything very well as long as we point it upwards. The inclusion of a magnet helps improve pickup direction, but it’s always best to record with a lavalier or lavalier mic. I recommend that you listen to the test we do with these microphones.

Bonus fact: if you’re recording audio, all you have to do is plug the system in with a USB-C cable to open the Finder on a Mac or Windows File Explorer. Nothing to install audio decoding apps. Simple and effective.

Convenient charging system I took them with me to MWC 2023 and honestly didn’t miss the RODE Wireless GO II. In addition to being easy to use, the fact that it lasts up to 5 hours allows for smooth operation of the entire system. Lunch time went to take out a small suitcase and load the whole set.

DJI Mic Worth it?

This is an amazing duo compared to the RODE Wireless GO II.

Yes, especially if you’re looking for a better system than the Wireless GO II. I think DJI knew how to exploit RODE’s shortcomings even though it raised the price barrier for a differentiated team. They have everything you need to improve the sound of your mobile phone, tablet or PC. Record even in Windows using your webcam and DAW. You already have everything. Follow them. I am after all.
