Archaeologists found the oldest pearl city in the Persian Gulf on the island of Sinia in Umm al-Quwain, located near one of the northern sheikhs of the United Arab Emirates. Phys.org writes about it.
The artifacts are from the pre-Islamic history of the region at the end of the sixth century.
“This is the oldest example of this type of Khaliji pearl city. It is the spiritual ancestor of cities like Dubai,” said Timothy Power, an associate professor of archeology at the University of the United Arab Emirates.
On this island, archaeologists have already discovered an ancient Christian monastery, which is 1400 years old.
It was also found that there were many houses made of beach stone and lime mortar, from cramped quarters to larger rooms with courtyards, indicating social stratification. The site also shows signs of year-round habitation, unlike other pearling operations taking place in contemporary locations in the region.
In the houses, archaeologists found loose pearls and diving weights used by freedivers to quickly descend to the sea floor, relying only on holding their breath.
A city landfill, filled with fragments of discarded oyster shells. People walking around the island can also feel it crunching under their feet.
“For every 10,000 oyster shells, you only find one pearl. To find one, you have to find and throw away thousands and thousands of oyster shells. The waste is enormous, the industrial waste of the pearl industry . You’re dealing with millions. , millions of discarded oyster shells,” the archaeologists added.
Recall that earlier a pearl 8000 years old was found in the Persian Gulf.
