It will be exhibited at the New York International Antiques Book Fair, April 27-30.
A rare manuscript of the Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus has been called De revolutionibus orbium coelestiumwhich translates as On the Revolutions of the Celestial Sphereswill be put up for auction. It is planned to be sold by auction for $2.5 million. This is reported by Live Science.
The work was written in 1543. He changed people’s view of the universe. In this edition Copernicus proposed that the Earth revolves around the Sun, and not the other way around.
This scientific edition significantly changed the field of astronomy and even paved the way for Galileo Galilei himself in this field of science.
At the same time, the book was considered highly controversial. The heliocentric model of the universe, according to which the sun is at the center of the solar system, and the planets revolve around it, directly contradicts the teaching accepted by the Catholic Church that the earth is at the center.
“This book is only rarely auctioned. It is rare to find it in this condition. It is an absolutely perfect copy,” said Christian Westergaard, founder of Sophia Rare Books, which is selling the work.
According to him, the only noticeable change in the book is the leather binding, which was replaced in the 18th century.
The edition contains several handwritten annotations. Scrawled on the title page are two names that can only be seen under ultraviolet light – Brugières and Jacobi Du Rour.
