Alleged million dollar scam cryptocurrencies has been torturing Brazilian footballers Gustavo Scarpa, Maike and Willian Bigodet and has been attracting press attention for several days in Brazil.
“I have always seen stupid people getting caught up in pyramid schemes, scams and the like. And to see myself in this situation is terrible for me,” says Scarpa, the Nottingham Forest player from England, who was named the best player in Brasileirao-2022 in the WhatsApp audio broadcast of the Fantástico program from the Globo network.
they are trapped
The midfielder and Maike, 30, filed complaints last November about alleged fraud from a Brazilian company Xlandin which they have invested most of their assets with the promise of earning up to 5% per month, according to what they told the civilian police.
The footballers, who were then split at Palmeiras de São Paulo, turned to the authorities after demanding their money in vain.
According to a police statement, Scarpa is demanding the equivalent of $1.2 million at current exchange rates, while Maike, one of the leaders of the São Paulo team, is asking for about $762,000.
Seleção and Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton would have also been hurt, although the goalkeeper did not comment on the situation.
“There are indications that fraud has taken place,” civil police spokesman Glausius Vinicius Silva told Fantástico.
Chain of scammers
Scarpa and Maike claim to have invested in Xland on the recommendation of his former Palmeyran teammate Willian Bigode, currently playing at Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro.
But he says he’s also a victim. Xlandcausing him to lose about $3.3 million between investments and earnings.
“I am not a scammer, I did not take anyone’s money. I am a victim because I have not received my resources until today,” he said in a video posted on Instagram on Monday.
Xlandbased in Brazil declares itself a victim of the collapse of the exchange platform cryptocurrencies FTX at the end of 2022 denies the pyramid scam and says it will compensate investors. (AFP)
