U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee votes to extradite President Joe Biden the right to ban TikTok in the country.
Lawmakers voted 24 to 16 to approve a measure that gives the administration new powers to ban the ByteDance-owned app, which is used by more than 100 million Americans, as well as other apps deemed security threats.
new paradigm
The bill does not specify exactly how the ban will work, but gives Biden the right to ban any transactions with tik takwhich in turn may prevent anyone in the United States from accessing or downloading the app on their phones.
“tik tak it’s a threat to national security… It’s time to act,” said Rep. Michael McCall, Republican chairman of the committee that sponsored the bill. “Anyone who has tik tak downloaded to your device gave the CCP (Communist Party of China) access to all of your personal information. It’s a spy ball in your phone.”
The fate of the latest measure is still unclear and it faces significant hurdles before it can become law. The bill must be approved by the Democratic-controlled House and Senate before it becomes official for Joe Biden.
disputes
tik tak has come under increasing criticism in recent weeks over fears that user data could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, undermining Western security interests.
The bill would also require Biden to ban any organization that “may” share sensitive personal data with a Chinese-influenced organization.
“American ban on tik tak it is a ban on the export of American culture and values to the one billion people who use our service around the world,” said a spokeswoman tik tak after the vote.
The Biden administration did not say whether it favors moving the bill forward, saying only that it has previously raised concerns about applications such as tik tak.
Democrats opposed the bill, saying it was rushed and required due diligence through discussion and consultation with experts.
