This discovery means that this five kilometer high mountain was once full of lakes and streams.
NASA’s Curiosity rover photographed “ripples” on Mars. They were formed on the slopes of Mount Sharp. This is reported by Live Science.
Scientists believe this is a sign of an ancient lake on the surface of the Red Planet.
“We’ve gone through thousands of feet of lake sediment and never seen evidence like this, and now we found it in a place we expected to be dry,” said researcher Ashwin Vasawada.
Scientists call this region a sulfate-bearing rock. Curiosity has been exploring it since last fall.
This place is rich in salt. It is assumed that it was formed as a result of the drying up of an ancient lake. In particular, as a result of the fact that the wind on Mars creates waves on the surface, which disturb the sediments below it. So they became stones.
Remember that Curiosity discovered the precious stone opal on the Red Planet. Scientists from the University of Arizona, USA, believe that this is a potential source of water.
