It turned out that the drug can accumulate in brain tissues and change the dynamics of neurotransmitter release.
Ukrainian scientists have discovered a new antiviral drug remdesivir, originally developed for the treatment of hepatitis C and used together with other drugs for the treatment of coronavirus infection COVID-19. Semyon Yesilevsky, a leading researcher at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, writes about it in the Telegram.
As analysis of membranotropic effects has shown, remdesivir is able to alter the dynamics of neurotransmitter release. The results of the discovery were published in the scientific journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta – Biomembranes.
“It turns out that the drug not only easily binds to cell membranes, but is also able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in brain tissues. It turns out that it’s not just passively sitting on cell membranes. neurons, but may alter the dynamics of neurotransmitter release (at least in vitro), ”the statement said.
Remdesivir is an amphiphilic drug, that is, due to its physical properties, it must be incorporated into the lipid membranes of cells.
“It’s clear to everyone, but, surprisingly, no one has investigated whether remdesavir somehow affects the membranes and what it could lead to,” the scientist commented.
According to Esilevsky, it is still not clear whether the property of remdesivir discovered by Ukrainian scientists can lead to any negative or positive consequences, but the drug has become a more interesting molecule than another divinely modified nucleotide. which blocks viral RNA polymerase.
It was previously reported that Ukraine will start producing the generic anti-covid drug Paxlovid from Pfizer. Recently, scientists have proven its effectiveness.
