Satellite images have revealed a land shift of up to six meters due to strong earthquakes happened in Turkey And Syriawith relief fractures for about 250 km.
The analysis was carried out by researchers from the German Aerospace Center (Germ.DLR), which analyzed and visualized data from a European radar satellite Guardian-1.
From space
In the image above, the largest crack, in the south of the affected area, is the result of the main earthquake that occurred in the early morning of February 6, 2023. The second crack, located to the north of the first, was caused by a strong aftershock that occurred in the morning of the same day. The blue zones represent eastbound traffic and the red zones represent westbound traffic, the DLR said in a statement.
Both regions where the earthquakes occurred belong geologically to the East Anatolian Fault, where the Anatolian and Arabian plates collide. This creates stresses in the earth’s crust, which are released during earthquakes. The resulting movements were accurately recorded by the satellites. For analysis, researchers from the Earth Observation Center DLR compared images taken on January 29 and February 10, 2023.
radar satellite Guardian-1 It is part of the Sentinel satellite fleet of the European Copernicus Earth Observation Program. Satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) transmits radar signals to the Earth’s surface and uses reflections to produce images day or night and in all weather conditions. SAR uses signal propagation time to make highly accurate measurements of the distance between a satellite and the Earth’s surface.
In the first week after the earthquakes, two researchers from the Institute of Optical Sensor Systems at DLR they moved to Turkey with the ISAR team from Germany. He DLR provided a new Modular Aerial Survey System (MACS) to help with situational awareness on the ground. Mounted on a high-tech Quantum drone, the camera system flew over the hard-hit regions and sent the resulting aerial photographs in map form directly to the United Nations Command and Coordination System (ICMS).
In that DLRThe Satellite Crisis Information Center (ZKI) also analyzes satellite images and converts them into digital maps and other products. This situation is reported to the local response teams. (Europe Press)
