Discover the real story behind the creation of Subway Surfers, a game published in 2013
Launched in 2012, Subway Surfersa mobile game developed by the Danish company SYBO Games in partnership with Kiloo Games, became a huge success by exploring the endless runner subgenre, that is, the game format in which the character chosen by the player runs non-stop at the same time in which you dodge obstacles that arise along the way.
Reaching 1 billion downloads in 2018, and responsible for acquiring the most installed Android game of 2017, Subway Surfers remains among the favorite games of some to this day. However, despite its success, many of those who have dedicated their time to running along the train tracks exposed in the game, do not know the story behind its creation.
Seeking to answer this question, in 2020, Twitter users shared the idea that the game was created from a tragic event in the creator’s life. According to the theory, the son of one of the game’s developers would have died after being hit by a train while skateboarding on the subway line, so Subway Surfers had been made to honor the young man’s memory – but, is that true? true?
Laying the facts on the table
The real events that marked the story behind the creation of the game were exposed years before by Mathias Gredal NørvigCEO of SYBO.
As verified by CanalTech, at an event held in London in 2018, the executive made it clear that there is no sad story that inspired the development of the game, quite the contrary, it all started with a common passion between the founders of the company : urban art.
With that, both used street fashion, skateboarding culture, music and graffiti as backgrounds to create the look of the characters and the environment that players can explore while running and collecting coins.
In addition, at the time the rumor emerged, one of the tweets that had gone viral was answered through the game’s official account, where the developer made it clear what were the real inspirations for creating the game. Look!
We created Subway Surfers to pay homage to street culture and diversity. We feel that the game allows for creativity and fun in a safe and entertaining environment. Thanks for running with us!

We created Subway Surfers to honor street culture and diversity. We feel the game allows for creativity and fun in a safe and fun environment. Thank you for running with us!”, says the text.
In the end, the intention of the game was really to honor the memory, but not of something tragic, but of the customs of street art, taking into the game the idea that urban art and its complements deserve respect and should be appreciated.
This idea gained even more strength through the “World Tour”, where urban art began to be explored in scenarios of important cities located in several countries around the globe within the game, showing that the artistic manifestations developed in the public space can be appreciated anywhere in the world.
