Researchers have yet to explain how insects do this. However, they have successfully demonstrated their ability.
Scientists have discovered for the first time that bees have the ability to distinguish between equal and odd numbers. IFLS writes about it.
They noticed that they could do it, even though they had never seen it,
This conclusion was made by researchers from Deakin University. They placed cards with different numbers next to the bee feeders. Thus, one group was trained to associate paired numbers with sweet water, and unpaired numbers with the bitter taste of quinine. The second group was taught the opposite associations.
Bees have successfully demonstrated their ability to select the appropriate number when faced with a choice between feeders.
“Bees who were taught to associate numbers evenly with rewards usually flew in the 12-figure feeder, while those who were taught to prefer odd numbers chose the one marked with the 11 shape. None in either group performed well on tasks at all 100%, but success rates of approximately 70% are clearly statistically significant, ”the scientists said.
However, how insects do this, scientists do not yet understand.
“We thought it might have something to do with the number of petals. The equal and unique number of petals could be another way for bees to distinguish between flowers (along with color and smell) which helps them distinguish or inform hive companions about the richest food sources. Or they may also be the first bees to use this ability, demonstrating their ability to learn quickly, “the researchers added.
Recall that in Denmark, scientists discovered the previously unknown ability of bees to clean the air. Insects accumulate small microplastic particles in their bodies.
In Brazil, a fisherman, who fled from bees, jumped into a lake with piranhas and died.
