space telescope James Webb discovered my first exoplanet with proportions very similar to those of the earth.
planet registered as LHS 475bmakes up 99% of the diameter of the Earth and orbits in the habitable zone of its star.
star to look at
This exoplanet It is relatively close to ours: only 41 light years away in the constellation Octance.
Painting LHS 475b it was obtained thanks to the near-infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) installed in the telescope, and detected thanks to observations of the transit: monitoring the brightness of the star.
At the moment it is not yet possible to detail the atmosphere exoplanetbut James Webb will take more detailed measurements to get this information.
“These first observations of an Earth-sized rocky planet open the door to many future possibilities for studying the atmospheres of rocky planets using James Webb, says Mark Clampin, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division. “Webb is bringing us closer to a new understanding of terrestrial worlds outside the solar system, and the mission has just begun.”

To date, only this exoplanet is known to be hundreds of degrees hotter than Earth.
James Webb he will continue to study it during the first half of 2023. This is already a big milestone, because to date the telescope has explored only exoplanets already known to scientists.
