The New Zealand Rugby Union on Wednesday appointed former New Zealand Governor-General Patsy Reddy as president, becoming the first woman to hold the position in its 130-year history. “It is an absolute honor to be elected President at such an important and exciting time for rugby (in New Zealand)said 68-year-old Reddy.
Patsy Reddy was appointed at the Auckland, New Zealand, rugby match which was established in 1892, according to the announcement. He will replace outgoing chairman Stuart Mitchell, who will step down at the end of January. Recognized for her long career as a tax law lawyer, Patsy Reddy was appointed to the New Zealand Rugby board of directors last April after serving as the country’s Governor-General, Her Majesty Elizabeth II, from 2016 to 2021.
Women’s rugby is on the rise in New Zealand, especially after the Black Ferns’ 34-31 victory over England in the World Cup final last month, the New Zealanders’ sixth world title at Auckland’s fabled Eden Park, arch-filled.
