With 73 votes to 32 with 6 abstentions plenary session Congress of the Republic approved this Thursday admission to the registration of the presidential vacancy against Pedro Castillo, whose debate and final vote will take place next Wednesday, December 7, from 15:00. Discussion these days will focus on whether parliament can get at least 14 votes to reach the 87 votes needed for final approval.

congressman Alejandro Munante, the third vice-president of parliament, acknowledged that the 14 votes they would need to get in less than a week could cause pessimism; however, on a positive note, he noted that the Constitutional Court has issued a precautionary measure in favor of Congress while it decides whether or not to approve a jurisdictional action against the executive over the interpretation of the trust question.

“Right now, one could be a pessimist and say that he is not there, but in a week a lot can change. I believe that the fact that constitutional Court Today, he amended the plan so that the executive branch ratifies what we said before official congressmen: that the president is not interested in your head, ”he said.

For his part, Congressman Edward Malaga-Trillo, promoter of the third presidential vacancy proposal, highlighted the progress in votes as he recalled there were 67 signatures for submitting the proposal, which was allowed to be debated this Thursday with 73 votes. In his opinion, this will reveal the presence of “hidden votes that were not reflected in the signatures, but which will be given over time.”

“It’s not as easy as it sounds (reaching 87 votes). Trends can change from one side to the other, and you should clearly understand that negotiations are underway in this area. Probably (Pedro) Castillo will look for what to negotiate, what to offer in exchange for votes, and we do not have such power, because we do not have control over the ministries,” he admitted.

Meanwhile, Congressman Roberto Chiabra He was skeptical of the possibility of garnering 87 votes for the presidential vacancy due to the stance of pro-government parliamentarians and admitted that if it was not approved, it would “leave Congress as a whole very weakened.” In his opinion, on December 7 “they will decide who is who at this congress.”

“I doubt, but I doubt the intelligence of official congressmen and their allies. If they don’t realize that the government’s goal is to shut down Congress and they keep listening to the prime minister saying that she’s not going to present the second confidence issue, then they’re assuming the first is already given,” he admitted. .

“Unless congressmen take it this way and take it seriously, I would say I said goodbye to all of them, because what caused this proposal to be submitted was the agreement to submit it when we had 87 votes, that’s because for the commitment to take the lead with a government that has changed the democratic order,” he added.

Flavio Cruz, a spokesman for the Perú Libre faction, downplayed the fact that four parliamentarians from that group supported admission to the presidential nomination process against Pedro Castillo. He said, Valdemar Cerrón, Flavio Cruz, Margot Palacios and Anel Reyes they supported the initiative to participate in the debate; however, he assured that they would eventually vote against the request.

“After yesterday’s meeting, we had a definite position, but there were some circumstances. We voted separately, but I think because of the final date incident, we made a decision pretty quickly. and we’re going to vote against the vacancy. We couldn’t accompany an authoritarian board of directors,” he said.

“All those who voted in favor may have had the illusion of adding these votes, (but) they lost them after the authoritarianism shown by the Table in the last circumstances of the close of the session. The agreement was to vote for admission, because we wanted to participate in the meeting, in the debate (…), but those who voted for will vote against,” he added.

In theory, it was supposed to take place on December 12, but it was remade on the 7th of the same month.

President Pedro Castillo is facing a new request to be fired due to an alleged “permanent moral incapacity” to continue in office.
