Peruvian Press Council (CPP) issued a statement on Wednesday warning that President Pedro Castillo has “hardened his speech against Click”.
This came after the president called the national press “biased” and accused it of colluding with powerful groups and “lying to the country.”
“Yesterday, in an authoritarian tone, he not only ordered operators to focus on university graduates, Armed forces that he was listened to in the palace, but instead insulted the press, calling it “biased” and pointing out that it was “lying to the country,” the CPP said.
“Situations like this encourage conflict and disagreement that can lead to violence, as happened minutes later when a protester physically assaulted a Hispanic reporter,” the organization said.
They ask the president to call for dialogue
Same way CPP thought that because presidential castle embodies the nation, “his speech should be a speech of dialogue, not confrontation, all the more so it should not fuel the demonization of professionals who convey information to citizens.”
“Speech like that which the president may end in embarrassing attacks on journalists. This happened in other countries as well,” he warned.
Finally, Peruvian Press Council asked the President “to moderate his speech against journalism, as befits a democracy.”
