The Organization of American States Election Observation Mission (EOM-OAS) noted on Tuesday the “atmosphere of calm” in which the regional and municipal elections held Sunday in Peru were held and welcomed the elected authorities.
“We want to take this opportunity to applaud the atmosphere of calm in which the regional and municipal elections took place (…) and welcome the newly elected authorities of the country,” the head of parliament said. EOM-OAS, Maria Alejandra Pericolain the social networks of the organization.
The organization hailed the citizens of Peru for showing up “en masse to the polls” on a day that was generally “civilian and organized”.
The 31-member Election Observation Mission was present in 11 branches, visited 153 polling stations and 596 tables, observed the preparations, the opening and closing of polling stations, the counting and transmission of results.
Thank you volunteers
Pericola noted that the mission was able to verify that, despite the fact that the polling stations had all the necessary materials, there was a long delay in the opening of polling stations due to the lack of Board of Directors what made them up.
“From the OAS, we call on citizens to renew their commitment and responsibility to the country’s democracy. The absence of members of the opening tables hinders the full development of Election Day,” he said.
For his part, he congratulated the elected citizens who had done their duty and the volunteers who, with their presence, made it possible to lay the tables.
He also stressed that the electoral contestants “responsibly” waited for official data from the National Directorate of Electoral Processes (ONPE) and respected the results.
Although the election was this Sunday, in many cases the official results are known, such as in Lima, more than 48 hours after the polls closed.
