Constitutional complaint of treason
A few days ago, Peru Libre parliamentarian Margo Palacios announced via her social media that she had filed a constitutional complaint of “treason against the country” against former Foreign Minister Miguel Rodríguez Mackay.
“I categorically reject any intention to persuade the ratification of the treaty agreement and we are warning citizens to be on their guard against any attempt to join,” he said in a Twitter.
The complaint was filed with the parliamentary subcommittee on constitutional charges and was motivated by statements Rodriguez McKay regarding its position that the State should sign maritime convention.
“At a ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the Santiago Declaration, he said that Peru should sign the UN Maritime Convention confirming that we never had a 200-mile territorial sea,” Palacios said.
According to the parliamentarian, “this will allegedly entail the loss of sovereignty over 188 miles of the territorial sea.” For this reason, in his official letter addressed to the chairman of the said parliamentary working group, Rocío Torres (APP), he pointed out that the outgoing foreign minister had violated the Criminal Code and the Constitution.
