The executive branch submitted a bill Board of Directors of the Congress which proposes that 30 August be declared “National Day of the Missing in the Period of Violence 1980-2000”.
Some 69,280 people have died in these 20 years of terrorist violence, according to the government, according to a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (CVR) report, and more than 21,000 people have disappeared “whose families continue to search for their loved ones.”
National Register of Missing Persons and Burial Sites (Renade) has information on 21,918 people missing during period of violenceof which 39 people were found alive and 2,679 people were found dead and their bodies were returned to their families with an obligation to continue searching for 19,200 missing persons.
The executive branch also indicates that the purpose of setting a date for this issue is to “preserve the memory, draw the attention of the population in general, as well as authorities and officials to the problem of people missing during the aforementioned period of violence.” The legislative proposal will be considered by the Ministry of Justice.
The official letter is sealed with the signatures of the President of the Republic, Peter’s castleand head of the Council of Ministers, Hannibal Torres.
