The top prosecutors in the Eastern Lima Financial District issued a statement on Tuesday to support Minister of State (MP) Patricia Benavidez in her investigation into President Pedro Castillo and his family on suspicion of corruption.
In a statement, they indicated that the State Ministry is an autonomous constitutional body, “whose main functions are the protection of the rule of law, the rights of citizens and public interests, ensuring the independence of jurisdictional bodies and the right to administer justice.”
Thus, they emphasized that the investigative actions carried out by prosecutors of all instances are aimed at finding the truth for the “fight against crime”, regardless of whether it is entrenched in the “highest spheres of power”, as established by the institutional policy of the deputy.
“Prosecutors act independently in the exercise of their powers, which they will exercise in accordance with their own criteria and in the manner they deem best for the purposes of their institution,” reads the letter, posted on official prosecutor networks.
