The President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, said this Saturday that he would not try to leave the country, even if he was convicted, as part of the investigation that is being carried out against him on charges of acts of corruption during his reign.
In statements from government palace, where he met with indigenous leaders, the president cited the rejection by parliament of his request to attend the inauguration of Gustavo Petro in Colombia more than a week ago. He questioned this decision, as he assured that he did not plan to leave the country and not return.
“They close the doors on you, saying that you are no longer going to return to your land (…) Those who talk about escaping are those who have experience, so they cannot establish anything else, and if anything, regarding this political a class that a peasant does not want for the sake of the country, one must judge, I never plan to leave this country,” he said.
Investigations for the President
Thus, Castillo referred to his position in the prosecutor’s office, where he has up to six investigations of alleged crimes. These reasons include alleged influence peddling in the 2021 purchase of fuel by state-owned Petroperú and alleged obstruction of justice in the dismissal of the interior minister. Mariano Gonzalez.
He is also under investigation for alleged use of influence in a promotion case with the Armed Forces and the National Police. For alleged corruption and aggravated collusion in a public works project and plagiarism in his university dissertation, which also involved his wife. Lilia Paredes.
Attorney of the Nation Patricia Benavidez opened a preliminary investigation into the president. Peter’s castle and minister Gainer Alvarado for an alleged crime against the public peace, in the form of a criminal organization. These are events triggered by works awarded in the provinces of Chota Cajamarca and Cayatambo Lima.
The Anti-Corruption Prosecutors’ Task Force has warned of the existence of a criminal organization engaged in various crimes such as aggravated conspiracy in the departments of Lima and Cajamarca.
