The Third Constitutional Court of Lima ordered on Monday Congress of the Republic temporarily suspend the procedure for electing a new ombudsman until the end of the amparo lawsuit filed by the union of the employees of the institution.
According to this union, the current selection process initiated in Congress to elect an official violates the principles of transparency, meritocracy and the right to participate in the political life of the country. However, congressmen continued the process, despite legal arguments.
“Third Constitutional Court of Lima Orders the President and members of the new Special Commission for the Selection of Candidates for Ombudsmantemporarily suspend the election procedure until the completion of the defense process,” the Judiciary’s Twitter account says.
The Special Commission for the Election of the Ombudsman last Friday identified three final candidates for the post of chairman of this institution. The list was to be sent that Monday to the President of the Parliament, Lady Camones, so that the corresponding vote could be taken in the plenary session.
The shortlist included Carlos Castro in first place, Jorge Rioja in second and Beatriz Ramirez in third.
According to the organic law of the Ombudsman’s Office, if none of the three proposed candidates receives 87 votes in the plenary session of Congress, the commission must proceed to formulate “consecutive proposals” in the next ten calendar days before the two-thirds of the legal deadline. the number of congressmen who are in favor of a particular candidate.
Ombudsman criticizes Anibal Torres’ persistence
