The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Thursday the appointment of new representatives of Peru to the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of American States (OAS), after the resignation of the ambassadors Manuel Photos of Rodriguez D Harold Forsythe to these accusations.
Through its Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Ambassador Luis Enrique Chávez Basagoitia, the current Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, will be Peru’s permanent representative to UN instead Paintings by Rodriguezand that Manuel Talavera Espinar, former Deputy Foreign Minister and current Ambassador to Mexico, will replace foresight in the Peruvian representation before the OAS.
On Wednesday, Photos by Manuel Rodriguez confirmed on Twitter that on August 7 he resigned “from the post of Permanent Representative of Peru to the UN.” In its turn, foresight ratified on the same social network that last Sunday he informed President Pedro Castillo of his decision to step down from the position he has held since last August.
Both resignations were formalized just two days after Pedro Castillo made new changes to the heads of six ministries, including the foreign ministry, in which Miguel Angel Rodríguez Mackay replaced former foreign minister Cesar Landa.
Rodríguez Cuadros, who was the representative of Peru until UN since September 2021, last week it ruled in favor of ratifying the Escazu treaty, which was shelved by the Congressional Foreign Relations Commission in July.
“29 environmental rights activists have already been killed in the Amazon. This fact undermines the values of any democratic society. Protecting the defenders is a priority of Peruvian diplomacy in United Nations. It is extremely important to ratify the Escazu agreement,” the diplomat wrote on his Twitter account.
Ambassador who was a minister Foreign relations in the government of former President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), he also recently criticized the Peruvian government’s decision to increase the number of visitors to Machu Picchu, which, in his opinion, “violates international standards” that oblige the country to “preserve it and not destroy it” .
“An increase to 5,000 a day in the number of tourists visiting Machu Picchu (…) paves the way for UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage Site in Danger. The sanctuary must be saved,” he said.
