Provincial Attorney for Money Laundering Marita Barreto was introduced as the coordinator of a special group that will investigate the cases “against government corruption” announced by the new prosecutor of the Nation, Patricia Benavidez. During the presentation ceremony, the National Prosecutor emphasized that the coordinator of this new working group has 17 years of experience in public service during which “he carried out demonstrative investigations”, including against a criminal organization headed by lawyer Rodolfo Orellana.

“This group will conduct strategic investigations in order, specialization, efficiency and speed. The fight against corruption is one of the main tasks of my administration, so I am sure that the prosecutors who will take over the functions of the special group today will meet the goals set in the fight against crime by the authorities,” he said.

For his part, the prosecutor Marita Barreto, coordinator of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutors’ Group, indicated that the goal of this new working group “is to radically confront the fight against corruption” among senior and middle-level civil servants. He added that they would consider “complicated cases involving political power.”

“Experience has shown that if the investigation is fragmented, there may be contradictory decisions, unnecessary delays in the investigation. That is why the Nation’s Attorney’s Office has decided to form this group to consolidate these investigations,” he said.

He also explained that the decision by which this special group was formed established the existence of two or more proceedings investigated in different specialized prosecutor’s offices against officials for crimes against corruption as requirements for accepting a case; that there are many explored and that they are associated with political power; that there is difficulty in finding evidence of the use of power.
