Congress: Establishment of commission to elect new Ombudsman suspended

Installation session Congressional Special Committeein charge of selecting suitable candidates for the election of the Ombudsman was suspended this Wednesday for unspecified reasons.

In accordance with the appeal sent to nine members of the said instance parliamentthe meeting was supposed to take place virtually this Wednesday, June 22, at 13:00, although this never happened.

In this regard, Congresswoman Norma Yarrow, MP from Country Successargued that the necessary time should be given to the process and not to create the feeling that the election of a new Ombudsman from parliament.

“I don’t know if this legislature will give us time, but I believe transparency is the main thing here to show the public,” Yarrow told the press before Congress.

Members of the new special commission to elect the Ombudsman are Congressmen Rosangela Barbaran (FP), Silvana Robles (PL), Elvis Vergara (Popular Action) and Freddie Diaz (APP). In addition, there are legislators José Williams (Avanza País), Jorge Montoya (RP), Alex Paredes (BM), Roberto Camiche (PD) and Ruth Luque representing the groups Somos Perú, Cambio Democrático and Perú Bicentenario.

Power of attorney decided to grant the precautionary measure requested by the Union of Ombudsman’s Office Workers and ordered Congress to temporarily suspend the procedure for the election of a new Ombudsman, appointed by a specialized committee of Parliament, until the processing of this process is completed.

This decision led to a change in the composition of the commission that oversees the process of electing an official. It was approved by the full Congress.

Maria del Carmen Alva hopes elections will take place soon

Congress President Maria del Carmen Alva announced that no later than July, before the end of her term, a new ombudsman would be elected.

“We have to carry out this election, we hope to do it before the end of the administration. A commission has already been formed, which will definitely meet in the near future to agree on guidelines and start discussing the proposals that the benches have. We must keep in mind that 87 votes are needed to elect the Ombudsman,” he said.

Talking on the radio CongressAlva also confirmed his refusal to run for president. Legislature and assured that versions pointing to the contrary are works of the press. He added that the next Board of Directors it should be “always open to dialogue and consensus-seeking, as we have done.”
