Go, Andrew Jackson, you are about to share the face of a $ 20 bill with an Indian-American woman.
The Treasury Department announced Tuesday that President Biden has elected Lynn Malerba, the lifeless leader of the Connecticut-based Mohegan tribe, as the next U.S. treasurer. The position oversees the United States Mint, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and United States Bullion Depot, better known as Ft. Knox.
The Treasurer’s office began during the Continental Congressional period before the establishment of the Treasury Department itself and one of its advantages was the appearance of the Treasurer’s signature on the front face of U.S. banknotes, which was an honor for the Secretary of the Treasury.
This means that when he settles down, Malerba, whose ceremonial title of perpetual commander was granted to him by the Tribal Council of Elders, will have his name on a $ 20 bill next to Andrew Jackson’s picture. Jackson was the president responsible for the removal of several tribes from the southeastern United States and was accused of following him in tears.
The Treasury said Malerba would be the first tribal leader and the first local woman to sign the country’s currency.
In addition to his responsibilities at the Mint and at the Engraving and Printing Office, Malerba will also head the New Tribes and Local Affairs Office, which should be central to treasury policy affecting tribes.
“This is a historic meeting,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who announced the appointment as part of a trip to South Dakota’s Rosebud Indian Reservation. “His leadership and experience will deepen our commitment to help expand economic opportunities for all tribal communities.”
In 2010, before becoming the first female commander in her lifetime, Malerba served as president of the tribal council, the post of chief tribal executive and chief executive of the tribal department for health and human services. He has also served on the advisory committees of the Indian Health Service, Department of Justice and Treasury.
