On Friday, Washington Commander-in-Chief Ron Rivera fined Jack Del Rio $ 100,000 and issued a solemn statement condemning the defense coordinator for statements made on Jan. 6, 2021 about reducing the uprising in the Capitol of the US.
$ 100,000 will be donated to the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
“As we saw last night [congressional] “The hearings that took place in the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 were an act of internal terrorism,” Rivera said in a statement, referring to the first public hearing on Thursday of a commission selected by the House investigating the uprising of the Capitol.
“A group of citizens tried to reverse the results of free and fair elections, which resulted in loss of life and damage to the Capitol,” Rivera said.
He added that Del Rio apologized for his comments and that “he understands the difference between the events of that dark day and the peaceful protests that are a sign of our democracy.”
While the coach acknowledged that Del Rio has the right to “express his opinion as a citizen of the United States,” he urged him to be more considerate of how he does it.
“His words have had an impact and his words have hurt a lot of people in our society,” Rivera continued. “I want to make it clear that our organization will not tolerate any equality between those demanding justice after the assassination of George Floyd and the actions on January 6 that sought to overthrow our government.”
Del Rio found himself on the defensive last week after denouncing the violence last year by a pro Donald Trump mob on Capitol Hill trying to dismiss the 2020 election results as “dust” while describing the lives of black in summer. The protest has been hailed as “a summer of rebellion, theft, arson and destruction of personal property” since police launched Floyd’s murder.
A Princeton study found that most BLM protests were actually peaceful. And when they became violent, they became involved in state-sanctioned violence, such as aggressive interference by local, state or federal authorities, or by anti-Protestants from extremist groups.
