A fourth-grade Texas survivor of a mass shooting at his elementary school on Tuesday said he was hiding under a desk with his classmates when a gunman rushed into their classroom and said, “It’s time to die.”
Talking to the child on local KENS 5 station without a camera, he said the assailant threw out the door and then entered his class at Wawald Robb Elementary School. When he heard the first gunshot, he said he ordered his friend to go under the table and hide with him.
“I can hardly hide. I told my friend not to talk because he would listen to us, ”said the boy, who did not know the identity, to the shooter.
He said he was later accompanied by four classmates under a table, covered with a tablecloth that may have been hidden from them from their kill. He said he saw the shooter bend slightly as he uttered the horrible words.
“It’s time to die,” he recalls.
A 10-year-old girl, who was also in class, tried to call emergency health services on her cell phone, her grandmother told The Daily Beast.
“Instead of picking it up and breaking or taking, he shot it,” said Berlinda Arreola, whose granddaughter Amery Joe Garza was killed. “She was sitting next to her best friend. “His best friend was filled with blood.”
Authorities said the attacker blocked the classroom, killing 19 children and two teachers. The teachers, the boy told KENS 5, did everything they could to protect them.
As soon as police arrived, the officer entered the courtroom and ordered the children to shout if they needed help, the child said. The girl shouted “help,” he said, and the gunman fired.
Other officers entered the classroom and shot the gunman. Once filming stopped, the boy said he saw the officers ’armor and headlights and came out of hiding.
“I want to tell all children and parents to protect,” the child said.
