“Why are you spending all this time voting in the United States Senate – why are you worried about the difficulty of getting this job, of defending yourself – if your answer is when slaughterhouses grow, when our children are fighting. Their lives, [is that] Are we doing anything? “Murphy said.” What are we going to do? Why are you here, if not to solve such an existing problem? “
With hands clasped in the air, Murphy continued, “I am here on this floor to beg, to literally kneel and plead with my colleagues. Find a way forward here. “Work with us to find ways to pass laws that aren’t likely.”
Murphy was a vocal gun control attorney after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in his state, in which 20 children were killed. Republicans have blocked nearly every attempt by Murphy and other Democrats to adopt new gun control measures, including tighter controls than previous ones.
