ex-president Alexander Toledo yesterday offered an interview to a Spanish news agency EFE, in which he tried to convince of his innocence and, therefore, of his status as a victim. The day before, Toledo said it would not allocate additional resources to delay the extradition, which has already been decided by the court and the federal government of the United States.
And yet, a few hours later, an “extraordinary motion” was issued, which his defense filed in court. Colombiathat is, four thousand kilometers from California. The “petition” was quickly denied by the judge, so Toledo has no choice but to face the San José Judicial Headquarters, where he will be interned until he is handed over to officials from Peru.
Court documents show a certain annoyance towards the defendant, who first resorted to public money to have a public defender before hiring the services of a highly regarded law firm. Toledo says he accepts the United States justice, but has articulated a serious criticism of Peruvian justice: it is dominated by Fujimori’s supporters, who do not forgive him for “victory over the dictatorship”, that it is less independent than the justice of Peru. China, Sudan or Nigeria signing an undignified agreement with the Odebrecht Company that conveys racial prejudice against Peru’s first indigenous president.
According to Toledo, Peru has returned to dictatorship with the complicity of Fujimori, big business and the drug trade. Admitting the failure of his court maneuvers, Toledo only asks not to be “killed in prison” and alludes to “remnants of cancer,” a disease that did not appear on his health declaration last March. In short, the former president remains constant in his demagoguery, in his sacrifice and in his inability to justify the trust that the majority of Peruvians once placed in him.
