Hernan Barrenchea, the lawyer for the family of Hugo Bustios, pointed out that the sentence, which sentences Daniel Urresti to 12 years in prison, includes criteria relating to the protection of journalists in conflict situations. The lawyer called the judge’s decision “flawless” and announced that the Supreme Court would make the same decision.

“We welcome the verdict because collects some criteria to require the state to have a duty to protect journalists in emergency zones in other countries, in zones of armed conflict or in crossfire. This sentence should be considered from this point of view as a criterion of the right obligation that the state should have towards journalists,” he said in News Extension.

“The verdict is an impeccable verdict. It meets the basic requirements to be valid and I think the Supreme Court will also confirm this because it is very well argued, very well thought out and, most importantly, justified. The reason for the verdict itself is that the journalist Hugo Bustiosin anticipation of what happened in 86, 87, 88 in Huanta, Ayacucho, published the excesses committed by both the army and the Shining Path,” he added.

In addition, he clarified that the work carried out bustios He was a nuisance to the military and that was one of the motives that led to his assassination.

“This is a response to the work that journalists do nobly. In this case, primarily because it is also important to note that Hugo Bustios He had a bachelor’s degree in law, so he submitted habeas corpus for arbitrary detention. This work, combined with the work of a journalist, did not really please the military,” he said.

Oscar Medrano: “There is still justice in Peru”

On the other hand, photographer and photojournalist Oscar Medrano remembered the work of his colleague Hugo Bustios and he emphasized that there was no justification for his murder.

“Indeed, Sendero’s madness was the most useless and cruel in relation to the authorities, in relation to people who did not have them. Many times I spoke with the leaders of Sendero and asked them what they were doing. They were killing innocent people. And they told us that they wanted it to be like China, from the countryside to the city, they also took advantage of the desolation that all the mountainous regions of Peru are in,” he said.

“With this proposal, we believe that there is still justice in Peru. (…). I don’t think there is any justification for such a death of our colleague (…). Judgment takes time, but it comes. I believe in justice, and justice will be able to solve this problem and make them pay,” he concluded.
