Defense Minister (Mindef) Jorge Chávez Cresta has indicated that he will not resign from his post, despite the fact that signatures are being collected for a vote of no confidence against him after his interpellation in Congress Republic.
“To resign at this time would be an irresponsible and cowardly act. I’m not going to leave my people. pedestals, piura, Lambayeque And Liberty. I believe that every opportunity, every person we can provide to help our population, we will make it happen,” Chavez told the press.
Likewise, regarding censorship, he said that Congress had the right to choose “appropriate acts”; However, he doubted that the motives for this proposal were former officers of the Armed Forces, who “know well how the secretary of defense and the current head of the Joint Command behaves.”
“I can’t address parliamentarians, I just make these kinds of comments about my surprise, knowing how the Ministry of Defense works and through the joint command of the Armed Forces,” he commented.
In that line, he added: “The military has always deployed based on the need to support disaster risk management through an operational company.”
On the other side, Jorge Chavez Cross announced that he would go to the north of the country to help those affected by heavy rains.
“In the next few days, the Ministry of Defense will send on behalf of the country, due to the critical situation at the moment, and we are going to receive a convoy of aid (…) Municipalities and every citizen in the framework of the emergency must decide supplies to look after, our population needs us today”, he pointed out.
Congress refuses to debate vacancy against Dinah Boluarte
Earlier, the plenary session of Congress refused to allow discussion of a vacancy proposal submitted against President Dina Boluarte due to more than fifty deaths recorded during protests that demanded both her resignation and the closure of Congress.
After a debate that lasted about an hour, the national representation decided to reject the measure by 64 votes against, 37 in favour, and 10 abstentions.
As they expected, the benches Fuerza Popular, Avanza País, Renovación Popular and Somos Perú They opposed the vacancy movement. For its part, People’s Action registered a division of votes.
