Former Vice Chancellor Hugo de Zela believed that relations between Colombia and Peru “will be absolutely spoiled by the statements” of the president Gustavo Petro.
In an interview program News extension from PTRthe diplomat said the final recall of Peru’s ambassador to Colombia would “certainly” have “some repercussions” on the commercial and other fronts.
“Yes, there is real damage. For example, in Colombia we have a mechanism of presidential meetings, binational cabinets, which actually remains paralyzed. Second consequence: the paralysis that has already occurred in the Pacific Alliance. Now, with two of the four partners with whom we have low-level relationships, the Pacific Alliance is likely to stop working. It hurts business. And thirdly, there are meetings of all kinds of cooperation, especially with a border country, in various areas: trade, tourism, migration exchanges, all this is paralyzed. It is very unfortunate what is happening,” he explained.
Criticizes “socialism of the 21st century”.
Hugo de Zela He pointed out that at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, the countries of the region agreed to live in a representative democracy and collectively defend this political regime in order to preserve it.
“What is happening today? Countries entering the orbit of socialism in the 21st century are changing this agreement. They no longer act on the basis of the belief that we should all be democratic, but on the basis that those with a similar ideology can do everything, and others are never right,” he asked.
According to the former Vice-Chancellor, “the logic of decision-making in international politics is changing in some countries.” “Now it’s based on the defense of ideology and it justifies anything and it’s an attack on democracy and it’s something to condemn and fight against,” he added. Hugo de Zela.
ambassador’s retirement
Dina Boluarte’s government ordered the recall of Peru’s ambassador to Colombia, Félix Denegri Boz, due to the “constant interventionist expressions” of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who does not acknowledge that former President Pedro Castillo carried out the failed coup. d’état last December.
Last night, the Foreign Ministry reported that Petro’s attitude and “constant meddlesome language has seriously deteriorated the historical relationship of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect” that existed between Peru and Colombia.
