Director of the Department of Prevention and Control of Cancer Ministry of Health (Minsa), Estela Malaver Meza, pointed out that human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with cervical cancer in 99% of cases.

“For this reason, it is important to promote preventive measures, such as the HPV vaccination for girls and boys, which starts this year. This is a Minsa effort and the goal is to vaccinate over 700,000 girls and boys this year,” he said.

Malaver also noted that between 70% and 80% of cervical cancer cases are caused by two types of HPV, namely 16 and 18, and this vaccine is very effective against these two types of virus, in addition to types 6 and 11, which cause other types of HPV. . Types of epithelial lesions.

“Our function is to prevent, so our strategy is to vaccinate in schools, and girls and boys who cannot do this can also go to various health facilities across the country,” he said.
