The Permanent Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court declared inadmissible address represented by the legal defense of former President Pedro Castillo. Through this mechanism, they sought to annul a resolution confirming the 18-month preventive arrest of the former president for the alleged crime of sedition.
In accordance with Power of attorney”an appeal filed by Castillo Terrones as a ground of appeal non-observance of a constitutional normviolation of the material prescription and violation of the guarantee of motivation”.
However, the Supreme Court indicated that “against a resolution that seeks to challenge no appealall the more so if the issuing authority is the Permanent Court of Criminal Matters of the Supreme Court, the highest court of ordinary jurisdiction.”
As a reminder, Castillo Terrones is currently in Barbadillo prison, serving 18 months of pre-trial detention after the December 7, 2022 coup attempt. Then he unsuccessfully tried to close down the Congress of the Republic and the entire Peruvian justice system.
The judiciary will consider Pedro Castillo’s appeal to uphold political prejudice.
Last Wednesday, March 15th Permanent Criminal Division of the Supreme Court regarded as “a successful appeal filed by Castillo Terrones in order to comply with the guarantee of political impeachment. With this in mind, the Judiciary has indicated that a hearing will be held in the coming days, at which the procedural parties will present their oral reports.
On the other hand, the judiciary ordered a second preventive detention of 36 months against former President and former Minister of Transport and Communications Juan Silva. As for the former Minister of Housing, Gainer Alvarado, he only issued a restricted turnout.
