Congress will vote this Friday on a request to review the plenary vote to allow for constitutional reform initiatives related to promotion of general elections are subject to study and conclusion in the Commission on the constitution and regulations. The plenary meeting is convened at 9:30 am.
The holding of early elections in the country is one of the demands of social demonstrations against the government of Dina Boluarte, which began in December last year and claimed the lives of more than 60 people.
Parliament Speaker José Williams Zapata urged legislators on the various benches to “reflect” to make the “best decision” when voting to reconsider the election results.
He also specified that it could be determined when the elections would be postponed. “What is required is that in this annual period of sessions, which ends in July of this year, the same thing can be seen, that is, the issue of early elections, obviously, cannot be the same as what is already is being decided. We discussed and gave, but something consistent will be determined in the constitutional commission,” he added.
Which parliamentary group demanded revision?
On February 17, the plenary session approved a petition to allow the submission and processing of legislative initiatives on constitutional reforms related to the promotion general election.
However, shortly thereafter the President of the Constitutional Commission, Hernando Guerra Garcia, announced that the Popular Renewal MP, Jorge Montoya, had proposed that this vote be reconsidered.
