We had been waiting for this for so long that it already seemed like an impossible illusion. Yet yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs USA (State Department), signed the extradition of the former president Alexander Toledo. Between the two planes, Anthony Blinken took the time to materialize what was important not to the US, but to Peru. Today it is difficult to imagine the hope that Toledo represented when his government began in 2001, and even earlier when he started the March four of his against Alberto Fujimori who was in power for ten years. Toledo he embodied the promise of democracy, the fight against corruption and the success story of a politician born in the small town of Ancash and with a doctorate from the prestigious Stanford University. His government had good ministers and refocused the economy with free trade agreements and massive infrastructure investments. Unfortunately, prosecution he has serious indications of over $31 million in bribery. When her imbalance in wealth was discovered, Toledo resorted to lies and claimed that the source of the money was compensation charged by her mother-in-law due to the arrest she suffered during the Nazi-collaborating regime in France. fled to USA as judicial restrictions approached, Toledo stepped up procedures to avoid extradition. In the end, North American justice justified the demand of Peruvian justice. There was no political decision, which was known yesterday. By presenting it, the United States confirms the transparency of the judicial process in Peru and allows the Peruvian authorities to judge Toledo.
