Jose Williams: ‘Perhaps an early election could be called’ in legislature expansion [VIDEO]

Congress President, Joseph Williamsyesterday, Friday, issued a decree extending this ordinary legislative assembly until February 17 next year to “consider and discuss issues of national interest included in the agenda.”

In this regard, at a press conference held today, the head of parliament indicated that a draft law on holding general elections could be included in the agenda of the plenary sessions.

“Since the extension of the annual period of sessions, there is a possibility that a bill on the same issue may be included (…) and should be voted on in plenary,” he explained.

In addition, he indicated that “if the Plenary session adopts it”, the said legislative initiative should be considered Constitutional Commission “at the appropriate time”, and after its publication it can be put back to the vote in the plenary meeting, since “it is a demand made by a significant part of the population”.

“We have an executive draft, we also have 3 more bills that are in the portfolio, and there may be one on the same topic, but it’s not exactly the same. It’s a question of what Constitutional Commission they can find enough arguments to put forward some (…) Everything will depend on what that commission and the Plenum decide,” he noted.

In addition, he emphasized that in order to “be able to touch on the topic of the same issue”, it must be “treated during the annual period of sessions”.

“If the Plenum allows it in the coming weeks, it could be the first or second of March for it to be played in this annual period of sessions. Until July, projects can enter (…) Everything will depend on which, firstly, Constitutional Commission and then the plenum will decide,” he stressed.

For his part, the all-new second vice president of Congress, Sylvia Monteza, He stated that both his bench, Acción Popular, and the parliament’s board of directors would meet to reassess what before the general election. Similarly, he defended the votes he received in the last legislature when the investigations into former President Pedro Castillo were discussed.

“Congressmen are not subject to an imperative mandate, I think we have our own opinion. If we voted that way, it’s because we did the analysis at the time. If I voted against[Castillo’s first vacancy]it was because the president had recently moved in and there was not enough evidence,” he said in press statements.

Silvia Monteza emphasized that the agenda of congressmen early election, but acknowledged that Popular Action does not support revisiting the debate. However, he stressed that the Board of Directors will prioritize dialogue with the government in order to reach consensus.

“We’re going to meet as a Board of Directors on Monday and that’s where we’re going to make a decision. I can’t put forward any opinion until we meet.
