The president’s announcement came a day after violent protests that left a man dead in central Lima. The head of state criticized parliament for not approving early elections despite the citizenship announcement.

” Congress of the Republic discussed postponing elections to 2023. And, as we already know by now, a fruitless debate that has not led to anything concrete, except for a revision that will be discussed tomorrow and which, we hope, deserves a second reflection, given the seriousness of the situation. I repeat that this vacuum is unacceptable for Peru,” he said.

As regards his bill, he argued that the elections would take place on the second Sunday in October, shortening the period Executive, Congress D Andean Parliament.

The President indicated that all Peruvians would be able to participate in an active debate on this constitutional reform in Congress.

“All persons and institutions may present their projects or their contributions to the Congress of the Republic. In addition, the Constitutional Commission should promote the active participation of the population in the debate on the development and approval of the constitutional reform,” he said.
