Ann Applebaum is convinced that the Russian president is pursuing the same goals as Stalinist propaganda did.
American writer and journalist Ann Applebaum explains how Putin’s propaganda works. He revealed this in an interview on the YouTube channel Tell Gordeeva.
Thus, the author of the largest study on the Gulag believes that the leader of the Kremlin pursues the same goals as Stalin did, therefore these regimes are similar to each other.
“Putin is convinced of the people that no one else can rule Russia. “I am here, and then there are no successors, no heirs, no mechanism of succession itself. “It’s not just that we don’t know who will replace Putin, if anything happens to him “Something will happen. We don’t even know how to choose this person. Now there is no Politburo. Who will decide who will be the next president of Russia? We don’t know,” she said.
At the same time, Ann Applebaum adds that convincing people that there is no alternative further reinforces a sense of nihilism and apathy. So, people don’t see the point in somehow influencing the government, but just trusting it.
“We can’t do anything, there’s no point in going into politics.” Why would people do something when there is no visible alternative? “Western democracy is enmity, decay and decay. You want it like in Europe? In Europe, crime and immigrants, terrible things happen there! Do you want it like in America? It’s worse there.” Propaganda created this idea that there is no way out. In this sense, Putinism repeats Stalinism. The point of Putin’s propaganda is to create apathy, nihilism and indifference. This is the similarity,” stressed the journalist.
In addition, the writer noted that another of the most popular tactics of dictators is “We are surrounded by enemies, no one loves us.”
“I think that Stalin and Putin have another thing in common – they both believe in this. Putin sincerely believes when he sees a crowd of protesters in Moscow, for example in 2011, that they are not ordinary Russians who gathered to protest, he sees the CIA or Hillary Clinton,” he concluded.
Earlier it was reported that the Russian theater and film actor Vladimir Gostyukhin is abandoning his daughter, who lives in the United States, and his sister, who lives in Ukraine.
